Information for parents about UCAS

As you will no doubt be aware, many students are now starting their university (UCAS) applications, and there are several things that they should be doing over the summer to help to make this process go as smoothly as possible. We encourage all students to start this process, even if they are unsure as to whether or not they want to go to university, as having basic information about qualifications etc. collated in one place is useful for job applications, and if they do decide to put in a university application at a later date the form is almost ready to go.

  • Visit universities – going on an open day is the best way of finding out about both the institution and the courses on offer.
  • Put together a list of all of their qualifications (GCSEs etc) with grades and exam boards.
  • Research courses
  • Work on their personal statement – a draft of which should be brought in to their personal tutor on Thursday 1st September.
  • Complete as much of their on-line UCAS application as possible.
  • Complete a good first draft of a personal statement

Important Dates

15 October 2011 - application deadline for the receipt at UCAS of applications for all medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and veterinary science courses and for all courses at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

4 November 2011 – internal deadline for UCAS forms. We aim to send forms to UCAS within two weeks of them being handed in. This allows us time to carefully check forms and personal statements for errors, and return them to students for correction if necessary

15 January 2012 - application deadline for the receipt at UCAS of applications for all courses except those listed above with a 15 October deadline, and art and design courses with a 24 March deadline.

24 March 2012 - application deadline for the receipt at UCAS of applications for art and design courses except those listed with a 15 January deadline.

30 June 2012 - last date for the receipt of all other applications for immediate consideration. Those received after this date will be held for Clearing.
