Huddersfield New College Student given the chance to shine

If injections and blood tests were Olympic events, he’d probably hold the world record. Now young diabetic, Paul Hagreen, will get the chance to carry the prestigious Olympic Torch next year.

Paul, from Elland, is among 8,000 across the country to learn that they have been chosen to carry the flame in the 70 day torch relay next year.

Paul was nominated by his mum, Karen, for the inspiring way in which he has managed his Type 1 diabetes from the age of four to become a top goal keeper.

Paul keeps net for the College’s Football Academy First XI. Paul is also the first choice goal keeper for Brighouse Town and Yorkshire Under 18s, and manages this whilst attached to an insulin pump around the clock.

Paul is studying for a Btec Extended Diploma in Sport. He said “I was thrilled when I found out. It is a great honour. And it is a once in a lifetime chance to be part of history.”

Paul will join 600 other inspirational young people from across the Yorkshire and Humber region to carry the torch 300 metres.
