Enrichment
Huddersfield New College has a strong tradition of engaging students in a wide range of additional activities. We feel it is important that whilst a student is with us, they get the opportunity to develop themselves beyond academic study, to become well rounded individuals.
To facilitate this process, we offer a wide range of additional opportunities for all students to participate in.

Advanced Cinema
This course will involve watching a series of alternative/cult films and creating an original research project. We will be discussing the merits of each particular film after the screenings. You will be planning and creating a profile on a particular film subject.
A great way to enhance your critical skills, support your work in other subjects (primarily Film, Media, Sociology and Psychology) and widen your frame of reference in film.
Basketball 3v3
Run by West Yorkshire Sport, enter a team and play in a round robin competition.
Basketball Development
The college team play in the British Colleges League with fixtures from September to April. Training takes place on Mondays with games on Wednesday.
CAD
This course provides an opportunity for students on Design, Multi Media, IT or Art courses to develop their skills in computer aided design. The course will initially focus on the use of Pro Desk Top to create 3-dimensional designs and 2-dimensional technical views.
CISCO
Students develop working knowledge of how computers operate, how to assemble computers, and how to troubleshoot hardware and software issues.
Creative Writing
This enrichment course provides an opportunity to develop some of the essential skills for either becoming a published author, or building skills for the further study of creative writing at university, in a supportive environment that models professional writers’ workshops.
You are encouraged to write in any genre you like, and will be supported by specialist texts to develop your writing skills in that genre. You will also be encouraged to prepare your writing to a publishable standard, and will be directed to appropriate publishing opportunities.
Cricket Development
The Cricket Development team has been running for 2 years and runs alongside the Academy. However, due to demand, this is through trial only and players receive the same specialist coaching as Academy players, 2 sessions a week. Matches are played in the summer months between May and July.
Dance Leaders’ Award
The Award in Dance Leadership uses dance to help people develop vital skills for life such as planning and organising oneself and others, teamwork, communication and motivation. Candidates don’t need to be dance experts – some get up and go and an interest in helping others are all that is needed.
Data Analysis Level 3
This course will be studied for 1 ½ hours each week and leads to a Level 3 qualification in Data Analysis. There is one exam in May which is made up of a written paper based on a pre-released data sheet. The course attracts UCAS points as follows:
This course has been developed to enable the study of statistical topics in practical, real-life contexts. You will use the techniques to model the real world and develop skills which can be transferred to other studies. This course would be particularly valuable to students wishing to go to higher education in the areas of Pshchology, Science and Business.
Decision Mathematics Level 3
This course will be studied for 1 ½ hours each week and leads to a Level 3 qualification in Decision Mathematics. There is one exam in May which is made up of a written paper based on a pre-released data sheet. The course attracts UCAS points as follows:
This course is offered to allow you to study a variety of problem solving techniques which may be applied to many practical, real-life situations. The methods you will study are relevant to subjects such as IT, Business Studies, Design and Computing.
Drama Rehearsal
Drama rehearsal is an additional extra session for learners who are undertaking drama related courses within the performing arts department. Students taking AS drama are invited to select this option in addition to their AS course, as this is where those practical rehearsals take place that really improve your grades. Learners should select both Wednesday afternoon E block slots.
Duke of Edinburgh
Do you enjoy being challenged? Would you like to develop your self confidence and leadership skills? Do you enjoy making new friends and discovering new interests and talents? If this sounds like you, then sign up for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Programme at New College. Individual students design their own programme in each of the awards sections; Skill, Service, Physical Activity, Residential and Expedition. The college provides training for the expedition section and organises its own expedition in the Yorkshire Dales during the summer term.
Dynamics
This course will be studied for 1.5 hours each week. It leads to a Level 3 free standing qualification in Dynamics which gains UCAS points.
Dynamics is the branch of maths concerned with forces and motion. This qualification is particularly suitable for students of physics, especially those who are not taking mathematics.
Fitness Suite
HNC Fitness Suite is a state of the art 21st century facility comprising of Cycle Ergometers , Treadmills, Rowing Machines and X-Trainers.
There are a range of free and fixed weights that cater for everybody’s individual needs. The Fitness Suite is staffed by experienced and qualified staff.

Football Development Men/Women
There are 2 male teams and 1 female team playing fixtures against other colleges. In the British College of Sport you will need to enrol on the football development programme, which involves attending coaching twice a week.

‘HNC’s Got Talent’
Calling all singers, dancers, comedians, actors, acrobats, jugglers, instrumentalists, bands, stand up, MC’s, beat boxers and magicians. Are you interested in auditioning for the HNC talent show or being on the panel of judges?
Hockey
The college Hockey team play in the British Colleges League and train on Mondays and play fixtures on Wednesdays.
Introduction to Counselling
If you are interested in a career in psychology, social work, teaching or the health professions, this course may be for you. You will gain a Level 2 qualification in Counselling Concepts, which will help you to understand the role of the counsellor. You will investigate the counselling profession and be given the opportunity to practice the skills needed to be an effective counsellor. You will also explore the theories that underpin the most popular types of ‘talking therapies’.
Journalism
Do you dream of working as a journalist?
Whether you are interested in a career as a journalist for a newspaper or magazine or just like to write and investigate current events and issues, then the Journalism enrichment course maybe for you.
Meditation and Relaxation
Learn how to meditate, relax, relieve anxiety and de-stress. This course will teach the basics of various meditation and relaxation techniques as well as offering the chance to take time out from a hectic schedule. This course is suitable for complete beginners or anyone just wanting to chill out in peace and quiet.
Music Rehearsal
Calling all musicians. Are you interested in playing the music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rogers & Hammerstein? If so, come along to the Performing Arts Band rehearsal on Wednesday afternoons. Please note - you must be of a good performance standard and be able to read music. Brass players especially welcome. This will culminate in an end of year show before the Christmas holidays, so you must also be available on some evenings.
NCFE Air Cabin Crew
The NCFE Level 2 Certificate for Airline Cabin Crew prepares learners for entry to airline industry training. The qualification provides the basic back¬ground skills, knowledge and understanding required to work effectively as a member of cabin crew. It is ideal for those seeking employment or for those wishing to enhance their studies in Travel and Tourism.
Netball
The team enters a Merit League and also National and Regional competitions.
New York Trip w/c 2nd July 2012

Outdoor Pursuits
This group is involved in a wide range of activities including archery, target shooting, climbing, canoeing, orienteering, skiing and mountain boarding. No previous experience is necessary and activities can be tailored to group interests.
Philosophy/ Religious studies
Philosophy encourages you to question and analyse everyday concepts and ideas and helps you develop an understanding of the physical world, our society and beliefs. We study Western Philosophy ideas from the last 4,500 years and apply theory to real world scenarios. This is an excellent enrichment to enhance your UCAS application form.
Portfolio Building
This course is aimed at helping students considering applying to the more creative degree courses ranging from architecture to product design, to put together a portfolio for interview. The course will look at a range of observational drawing and sketching techniques and life drawing in an informal atmosphere. Students will have the opportunity to tailor the course to their own particular interests.
Rugby League Development
This is played at college and the team plays in the Student Rugby League framework. The Rugby League team train once a week and play on Wednesday.
Ski/Snowboard Society
Are you interested in skiing or boarding?
Any level is very welcome to join, from the experienced snow-lover to the budding beginner. This society is here for you to make friends, gain more skiing knowledge and help arrange an Easter ski/boarding trip to Italy. For more information please contact Emily Zubak or Edward Broadbent.
Taekwondo
Students who participate in this activity can improve: strength and stamina, confidence, flexibility, concentration, self esteem and leadership skills.
Video Production
Ever wanted to direct your own short film? Got an idea for a story you would just love to turn into a reality? The Video Production enrichment aims to teach you the skills to be able to create your very own short film. Through the study of existing films and practical workshops the course will allow you to develop your skills in all aspects of video production. You will develop skills in camera work, directing and editing using industry standard equipment, with the ultimate goal of creating an original short film. No prior experience is needed, just an interest in the film-making process.
