Huddersfield New College Sport > Academies > Golf Academy
The golf academy started in September 2007 with an initial intake of 7 students. September 2008 will see this number more than double with an expected 16 golfers on the programme.
The aim of the academy is to enable talented golfers to develop their game and to provide progression pathways for those who may want to be involved in golf as a career. Information on scholarships, PGA teaching qualifications etc will be given to students at an appropriate stage of the programme
A typical week on the programme will consist of:
- Work on the range under the supervision of a fully qualified PGA professional
- Work on pitching and putting (weather permitting)
- Work on fitness related to golf
- Swing analysis (all students will have their swing filmed at the start and a visual analysis package enables the swing to be looked at later in conjunction with the professional)
Playing
The playing side will consist of the following:
- The College plays in the intercollegiate tour. This is a national competition initially run on a regional basis. It consists of 6 rounds which will be played between October and March. The winner of each area will play in a final against other regional winners. New College were the first winners of the Eastern region title (this year)
- There will be a regional qualifying competition for the NE section of British Colleges Sport. The best 4 golfers on the day represent the region in national finals later in the year
- When there is no tour event organised we will try to arrange friendly fixtures against other schools and colleges
- If there are no friendly or tour fixtures then the students will play against each other. The results from each week will be added together to give an overall College Order of Merit. The winner in 2007/08 was Joe Banner
The final part of the programme is to give students the opportunity to work with youngsters from local junior schools in order to introduce golf to them. Students will take part in two workshops
- Tri Golf
- Extreme Golf
Tri golf uses plastic clubs and balls an is used as the first introduction to golf
Extreme golf uses real clubs with balls that don’t fly too far and brings in coaching points which are related to the real game
