The college welcomes students with a learning difficulty or disability. We will try to make sure that you receive the support you need in order to succeed on your chosen programme of study. Currently the college has no specialist provision for students with moderate or severe learning difficulties.
The college fully supports and wishes to ensure that it complies with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (as amended by the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2000 and the DDA 2005). If you wish to enroll at the college and have a disability, please ensure that we know what you need so that we can make all reasonable adjustments to help you succeed.
Admission to college can be arranged in a way that suits your individual needs. All applicants are invited for interview and general details of any needs you might have will be discussed then. Contact will be made for you with Christine Woodrow, Assistant Principal, who will arrange to discuss your individual requirements and the specific kind of support you may require whilst studying at college.
As part of the admissions process, the Health & Safety Officer will complete a risk assessment to help ensure your safety in college.
The support that we offer will depend on your individual needs and is organised on an individual basis. Support may include:
If you need confidential help or advice about health problems or relationships or you're just feeling stressed or down, the Open Door Service is available to help you. Details of services and opening times are displayed around the college and are available from Student Services.
There is a 24 hour answerphone (01484-347885) for the school nurse team. Leave a message and he or she will get back to you to make an appointment.
Lists of qualified first aiders are displayed throughout the college and are available from Student Services.
If you want information from leaflets, these are available in racks outside Room 500A.
You may find this 24-hour helpline useful if you are worried about a health problem and can't reach a doctor quickly. An Internet site is available at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk
College staff will liaise with examination bodies to request any appropriate special arrangements for assessment. The arrangements might include an additional time allowance to complete examinations, the use of a computer, the services of a reader or scribe, large print papers or an agreed break within the examination.
We will try to accommodate any student whom the college feels could benefit from a programme of study with us and will seek to make any reasonable adjustment to our provision in order to meet a student's needs.
We try to ensure that any student with a learning difficulty or disability can take full advantage of educational trips and visits and work experience placements. We are also committed to providing access to enrichment activities wherever possible.
