Art (Textiles) (AS/A level)
Specific Entry Criteria
Grade C in English Language and grade C in Art or Textiles or suitable portfolio of work.
About the Subject
Experimentation into techniques and processes includes stitch, dye, felt, knit and garment construction to develop understanding of shape, form, pattern, texture and colour.
All practical work is underpinned by critical analysis of appropriate sources. Students are encouraged to visit galleries and exhibitions in order to view artwork first hand.
The course is taught by specialist tutors with an extensive knowledge of the subject.
Course Content
Year 1
2 units are studied in year 1 both carry equal weighting at 50% each.
Unit 1 – Portfolio
For this unit students will provide a portfolio of work demonstrating a diverse range of technical skills and techniques in a variety of media. Students will initially be encouraged to explore media / techniques such as stitch, appliqué, felt making and mark making through a range of workshops. These initial practical explorations will then lead to a more sustained and focused project. The study of designers is an integral part of the course and students will learn to analyse and critically appraise the work of others as part of their project research.
Unit 2 – Externally set assignment
Students are issued with a list of topics set by the Examination Board and will choose one to be the topic of a sustained project. As part of this project, all students must work for a period of 5 hours under examination conditions this will be during the developmental part of the project.
Year 2
2 units are studied in year 2 both carry equal weighting at 50% each
Unit 3 – Personal investigation
Students, in consultation with their tutor will produce a self initiated project consisting of practical coursework and an essay of 1000 to 3000 words relating to their practical research. The topic for the project is broadly cantered around fashion and is of a personal choice based on strengths and interests experienced at AS level. Garment construction skills will be taught within the second year of study.
Unit 4 – Externally set assignment
Students are issued with a list of topics set by the Examination Board and will choose one to be the topic of a sustained project. Students will develop a range of work which concludes in an in- depth final piece which will be constructed within the 15 hours under exam conditions usually over 5 days.
Fashion Show
At the end of each year you will be encouraged to participate in our spectacular showcase where you will model your own garments down the catwalk.A2 textile students organise and raise funds in order to make it a truly memorable occasion.
What Support Will I Receive?
A range of supportive measures are designed for you to succeed. Lessons within the art department are very much centred on a one-toone approach. Tutors are open and friendly and lessons are lively and engaging within a stimulating specialist classroom which offers you excellent facilities.
Assessment
Students are assessed continually throughout the course, where feedback provides the opportunity for students to improve work and subsequent grades. Final assessment is in May.
