About the Subject

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism is an ideal course if you wish to follow a career in one of the many sectors of the Tourism and Travel industry. This qualification will also help you to go on to higher level qualifications or go straight into employment. It can prepare you for a range of jobs in both the public and private sectors, in places such as visitor attractions, travel agencies, hotels and restaurants.

The department is excellently equipped with ICT facilities and a supportive learning environment is provided.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma course is made up of eighteen separate units with nine being taken each year.

Course Content

Year 1

In the first year you will be looking at how the Travel and Tourism industry developed and how it has advanced over the last 50 years. All BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma students undergo a work experience programme that covers 2 units within the first year. This involves you attending the placement one day a week for four months. The department has excellent links abroad and you will have the opportunity to attend a three week work placement programme in Sweden in various Travel and Tourism related organisations. A residential abroad is on offer to cover units such as European Destinations, Responsible Tourism and Customer Service. Trips to various conferences and events and local business link to practical based units in the first year. You will also organise your own residential trip as part of your assignment towards the end of the year.

Year 2

The units in the second year are more specialised and focus on the different areas of the travel and tourism industry in more depth such as Hospitality, Tour Operations, Holiday Representatives and Visitor Attractions. Trips to places such as Alton Towers, London, The Clothes Show, Manchester and Lake District have been organised to support the delivery of these units.

Assessment

The course is assessed by assignments only and is graded at Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction *. Your tutor will negotiate a deadline with you when the work is due to be handed in. A variety of teaching methods and learning styles are used such as:

  • Use of IT facilities to enhance assignment work
  • Role plays
