Business (BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma)

Specific Entry Criteria

Grade C in English Language or Maths.

About the Subject

A BTEC National Diploma is a practical, workrelated course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Students focus on a particular subject area and develop a range of specialist skills and knowledge.

The BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to three GCE A levels. This makes it a self contained course with no necessity to study a further advanced level subject.

It is an excellent course either to prepare students for degree level study or entry to employment. Most students do progress from college to a business related degree course at university.

Students have excellent progression routes both to universities to follow degree programmes in business and also to gain employment.

Course Content

Students cover a wide range of business topics in detail. Broadly the key areas are human resources management, finance, marketing, business enterprise, business on line, business ethics, recruitment and selection and business enterprise.

Students will study a total of 18 units, 9 in year 1 and 9 in year 2. Each unit is equally weighted towards the final grade.

These optional units are selected to give the students a broad business experience. They enable students to practically ‘project manage’ and evaluate performance of both individuals and teams. Furthermore, the course provides an excellent mechanism to enable students to work towards level 3 key skills in communication, numeracy and Information Technology.

Assessment

All units are internally assessed and graded by teachers. An overall grade for the qualification is awarded to all learners who successfully complete all units. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Work experience

All students will participate in work experience at the beginning of year 2. This will be a 2 week block and will be integrated into the teaching and assessment of a work based learning assignment. Opportunities are also available for students to undertake a 3 week international placement.
