About the Subject

This is an ideal course if you have studied GCSE Health and Social Care at school and would like to extend your knowledge, or you can start this course from scratch. It is the equivalent of 4 GCSEs and a well-recognised qualification, which is intended for students interested in working with people.

Over the years the intermediate course has proved to be very successful in terms of results and in enabling students to progress to an advanced course. We see this as a very positive year for our students as it will boost your confidence in being able to achieve and it will also prepare you for the rigours of advanced study.

Course Content

This is a one-year course in which you have to cover 8 units. All of these units are assignment based, there are no exams.

Throughout the year you will collect evidence for your portfolio and although much of this will be written, it may take the form of posters, leaflets, and taped or videoed evidence. Case studies, group work and role-play may also be used to help you collect evidence.

Mandatory Units

Unit 1 – Communication in Health and Social Care This unit looks at different ways of promoting good communication, barriers to communication and ways of overcoming these barriers. It also looks at diversity and equality in society and how these affect communication along with the care value base and how this can be used to promote the rights of individuals.

Unit 2 – Individual rights in Health and Social Care This unit looks at the everyday needs of individuals in society along with the factors that influence the health and needs of individuals. It also looks at the potential hazards in health and social care environments, the main principles of health and safety legislation, and guidelines for health and social care environments.

Unit 3 – Individual needs in Health and Social Care This unit aims to build understanding about hoe to meet individual needs. It will explore the influence of these needs on health and well being and how they may be addressed to improve the health and well being of an individual.

Unit 4-Ensuring Safe Environments in Health and Social Care This unit aims to explore the knowledge and skills which relate to health and safety issues including legislation, risk assessment and the actions that are needed to minimise potential hazards and risks.

Chosen Optional Units

Unit 6- Cultural Diversity in Health and Social CareWhich looks at the value of cultural diversity and how it can be used to help promote equality of opportunity for service users.

Unit 7- Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care Which looks at the structure, function and interrelationship of major body systems, monitoring body systems and malfunctions in body systems.

Unit 8 – Human lifespan development Which looks at the developmental changes that occur at different life stages, positive and negative influences on individuals, factors affecting self-concept and the changing care needs at different life stages.

Unit 9 – Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care This unit will develop understanding about the need to carryout creative and therapeutic activities with different service user groups.

Assessment

The units and the full award are graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction and Distinction*.
