Sport (BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma)

Specific Entry Criteria

Grade C in GCSE English Language. A minimum of two D grades in Science GCSEs.

About the Subject

The BTEC Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma is an advanced work related course. You learn and are assessed by completing coursework assignments related to aspects of sport such as fitness testing, sports development and coaching. In addition you will learn about the employment opportunities in different areas of sport. There are none of the written examinations that you have to take in the AS and A level courses. It is ideally suited for those interested in a sport related career or for those wishing to study the subject at first degree level.

The certificate course is made up of 3 units. It is a one year course that is equivalent to an AS level. The subsidiary diploma is a 7 unit course that will take 2 years to complete and is equivalent to an A level.

The course includes practical sessions wherever possible to help students apply theory into practice. ICT is used to support students in their work and the sports facilities available are outstanding including a full size sports hall, artificial playing surface and fitness room.

Course Content

Study will take place in a variety of different modules including core units. The core units are:

  • Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
  • The Physiology of Fitness
  • Assessing Risk in Sport
  • Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise

Three further units will be studied in the second year for the subsidiary diploma. These will be selected from:

  • Sports Coaching
  • Sports Development
  • Practical Team Sports
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Current Issues in Sport
  • Leadership in Sport
  • Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
  • Psychology for Sports Performance
  • Work Experience in Sport
  • The Athlete’s Lifestyle

As part of their practical programme, students may have the opportunity to undertake the Sports Leader Award Level 2 developing both their personal and communication skills while gaining an important nationally recognised qualification.

As part of the course, all students will have the opportunity undertake a work experience placement in a relevant area of the sports industry to further develop their knowledge and experience. Past students have gained placements in areas such as gymnasiums, school PE departments, sports development units and leisure centres.

The course is ideal for students who would like to pursue a degree in Physical Education, Sports Studies, Sports Development or Sports Coaching.

Assessment

All modules are assessed through assignments and are graded at pass, merit or distinction, giving an overall grade for the qualification at the end of the course. All assignments are internally assessed and externally verified.
