Dance (BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma)

Specific Entry Criteria

Grade C in English Language and a minimum of 2 years dance experience. G.C.S.E dance preferred.

About the Subject

The study of dance engages both the body and the mind, challenging you to work in a self-disciplined yet creative way to explore the choreographic process from the view of a choreographer, performer and critic. You will study dance with a contemporary focus, learning and developing technique and analysis. Throughout the two years you will perform in a variety of locations and various times in the academic year.

Course Content

Year 1

The first year of the course (BTEC Certificate) you will study the following units.

  • Dance Performance (Mandatory) - This unit develops physical and interpretive skills and looks at the techniques required for performing dance, preparing you for the performing to an audience unit in year 2. You are required to perform in a group and in a duo/trio
  • Choreographing Dance - This unit will develop your understanding of the principles of choreography. By the end of this unit you will be able to produce choreography for different kinds of dance styles and for different purposes.
  • Developing Contemporary Dance Technique - This unit is about developing contemporary dance technique and will give you the opportunity to gain a solid foundation of skills in this style of dance. The practical aspect of this unit will develop dance skills whilst setting achievable goals and targets, strengthening your technical ability. You will take part in regular technique classes in order to develop the skills required to dance in a contemporary style.

Year 2

In the second year (BTEC Subsidiary Diploma) you will study the following units;

  • Performing to an Audience (Mandatory) - This unit brings together all the skills and knowledge developed over the course. You will present rehearsed ensemble work to a live audience as part of a dance showcase in an end of year celebration.
  • Choreographic Principles - This unit will develop your knowledge of the process of choreography. This will be achieved through a series of practical tasks which will enable you to explore movement design and to create dance for performance. Various choreographic techniques will be studied in order to create innovate dance work.
  • Dance Appreciation - Understanding dance is a fundamental element to the course allowing you to analyse and appreciate professional dance work. Here you will learn about how dance is created and how we can understand choreographer’s styles and techniques. A unit that has both a theory and practical focus, allows learners to explore dance work in their own way. Theatre trips

Assessment

The course is made up of completing and passing a minimum of 6 units. Assessment is through ongoing assignment based work and can vary from written tasks to practical demonstration of skills in the three areas. On completion students will be awarded with an overall grade which can be used towards entry to university.
