Maths (GCSE)
Specific Entry Criteria
Grade D in GCSE Mathematics is required for the 1 year resit.
Grade E in GCSE Mathematics is required for the level 2 Free standing Mathematics qualification.
If you achieved 1 or 2 grades below a grade C in GCSE Mathematics, when you enrol at New College, you will be expected to work towards one of the two qualifications we offer. Whichever option you enrol on we will endeavour to make the course enjoyable and relevant to your studies.
We will discuss with you which course is most appropriate, and place you on the one which most closely meets your needs.
About the Subject
GCSE Mathematics is a valuable qualification, regularly asked for by employers and university courses as an indicator of numerical and analytical skills.
The FSMQ in Financial calculations is a valuable qualification and is superior to a GCSE grade D. Some employers/colleges accept it instead of GCSE C.
Course Content
GCSE Mathematics
This one-year programme follows the AQA Modular specification. You will complete 3 modules over the course of the year.
The pace is fast and full attendance at the 3 lessons is essential for success. A calculator is an essential item and must be brought to all lessons.
Free Standing Mathematics Qualification in Financial Calculations
This is a short course which requires attendance at 2 lessons per week. A calculator is essential as useful topics such as Salaries, Tax, Mortgages and many others are covered.
Assessment
GCSE Mathematics
The annual pattern of assessment is as follows:
- November, Module 1, Statistics and Number, 27%
- March, Module 2, Number and Algebra, 33%
- June, Module 3, Geometry and Algebra, 40%
Free Standing Mathematics Qualification in Financial Calculations
The FSMQ will be assessed by one 75 minute written paper in late May (calculator) with prerelease material.
Results are published in late August.
All successful students (over 85% last year) can take the one year GCSE in their second year if it is needed for their future careers.
