A LEVEL FILM STUDIES STUDENTS EXPERIENCE CLASSIC CINEMA IN ACTION

HNC’s A Level Film Studies students recently enjoyed a trip to the Everyman Cinema in Leeds, experiencing films studied in the classroom on the big screen, and seeing first-hand how casting, soundtracking, lighting and editing transforms film and witnessing the driving factors behind what makes a film commercially successful.

On the day, the group watched two blockbuster films from opposing genres and eras – the award-winning hit ‘La La Land’, written and directed by Damien Chazelle, full of musical numbers, cinematography, visual style and costume design, and the coming-of-age comedy ‘Dazed and Confused’ written and directed by Richard Linklater, a classic comedy film that follows rowdy teenagers on their last day at high school in the 1970s. Students also enjoyed pizza and popcorn at the Everyman cinema for a truly authentic experience!

Dan Hanlon, Head of Faculty Creative Art & Digital, comments ‘Watching films on the big screen – just as the director intended – is always an experience for the audience. Our recent visit to the Everyman Cinema provided an insightful and enlightening opportunity for our students with a passion for film to experience two completely different genres and analyse and understand how the different techniques used can influence the audience and keep them hooked! For our students who are planning to progress to a career in film and cinematography, these experiences are essential for immersing themselves into the world of cinema, and understanding the importance of the audience experience when creating cinema!”
