A ‘RADICAL’ EXPERIENCE FOR HNC’S A LEVEL SPANISH STUDENTS

HNC’s A Level Spanish students have recently enjoyed taking part in an immersive language experience at HOME Manchester, in a session led by Dr Carmen Herrero, Principal Lecturer in Spanish Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University.

In A Level Spanish, students explore Spanish culture, learning more about the identity, creative arts and politics of Hispanic society. Students studying Spanish at HNC recently took part in an opportunity to further develop their knowledge of Spanish literature and film, taking part in a special workshop at HOME Manchester, an independent cinema, theatre and art gallery. The workshop, which was led by Manchester Metropolitan’s Dr Carmen Herrero included a special screening of the Spanish language film, Radical, based on the true story of Sergio Juarez Correa, an unconventional teacher based in the Mexican border town of Matamoros, exploring themes of social impact and transformative education.

Following the film screening, the group then took part in a range of Spanish language exercises, enjoying sessions including a film critique, and exploring the key themes and central characters of the movie, including investigating the theme of representation.

Jenny Rome, Teacher of A Level Spanish comments “Studying A Level Spanish at HNC is about so much more than learning the language – it is about immersing yourself in a different culture and understanding more about the social, creative and political influences that have shaped Spain. This was an incredible opportunity for our A Level Spanish students to take part in a degree level workshop that really stretched and challenged their language skills. The topics discussed at the workshop directly link to the topics studied here at HNC and has provided the group with a wider understanding that will undoubtedly support their achievement in their upcoming assessments”.
