HNC’s Dance and Musical Theatre students have recently enjoyed a spectacular performance of the hit musical, Chicago, at the iconic Alhambra theatre in Bradford in preparation for the College’s own end of year rendition of this much-loved Broadway musical.
Set in the city of Chicago in the ‘Jazz Age’, Chicago the musical is a satirical take on the corruption found within the American criminal justice system and the concept of the ‘celebrity’ criminal. First performed in 1975, the current production is one of the longest running musicals in the history of Broadway and is known for its show-stopping hits ‘All That Jazz’, ‘When You’re Good to Mama’ and ‘Razzle Dazzle’, amazing costumes and unrivalled choreography. This year, the College who will be hosting its very own version of Chicago, invited students from across the Performing Arts department to experience the professional this production of Chicago on stage at the Alhambra. The experience, which was designed to inform and inspire their own performances as they start planning and rehearsals, also provided our students with an opportunity to enjoy the performance as audience members rather than as performers – another important area for consideration when hosting your own production.
Cat John, Teacher of Dance and Musical Theatre, comments “We are excited to announce that this year’s HNC musical production will be our very own version of Chicago. We are incredibly lucky that we were able to enjoy the Broadway production – which is currently undertaking a UK-wide tour – to inform our pre-production planning and inspire our students’ own performances. Our Dance and Musical Theatre students found the experience genuinely motivating and are incredibly enthusiastic to bring the energy from watching this spectacular show to our very own Boilerhouse theatre for our production next year”
