CAREERS IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE: CLINICAL PHOTOGRAPHY

HNC’s Applied Health and Social Care students have been exploring the wide range of careers their qualification can lead to, and recently enjoyed hearing about one of the less well-known options available to them – Clinical Photography! Rebecca Simpson, a Clinical Photographer from the Northern Care Alliance recently joined HNC’s Health and Social Care students to share more about her role and how it supports patients and the wider NHS.

Clinical Photography is a key way in which medical professionals can track a patient’s progress. It can also be used for treatment planning, research and education, taking place either in a studio or at the patient’s bedside. It’s a role that not many are aware of, and in this enlightening workshop, the group heard more about the day to day life of a Clinical Photographer, and how taking a visual history of a patient’s progress, for example, before and after surgery, allows healthcare professionals to track changes and improvements in the patient over time, supporting Doctors and other healthcare professionals in their roles.

Rebecca, who specialises in ophthalmic, dermatology and non-accidental injury Clinical Photography provided an insight into the skills and qualifications needed to progress to a career in the industry, as well as hosting a ‘guess the body part’ quiz using a variety of past clinical photographs – an activity that showcased how it’s not a career for the faint of heart!

Victoria Simpson, Teacher of Health and Social Care comments “The Health and Social Care sector employs over 3 million people in the UK, with over half of those working for the NHS. A qualification in Health and Social Care can support progression to a variety of healthcare roles – many of them well known, but some of them more niche, like Clinical Photography! Students studying Applied Health and Social Care at HNC are encouraged to explore the wide range of opportunities open to them as they progress from College though a range of opportunities and experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom. Many thanks to Rebecca for joining us and delivering such a fascinating workshop.”
