CELEBRATING DIVERSITY & CHALLENGING CONCEPTIONS: HNC COMMUNITY JOINS WORLD RELIGION DAY

HNC has revealed that tomorrow, Thursday 16 January, students and staff will be invited to join a range of activities to celebrate World Religion Day.

World Religion Day is an international day which takes place each January, and aims to promote understanding and peace between all religions, as well as mutual tolerance between people from different backgrounds.

Tomorrow students will be invited to share more about their personal beliefs, and firm up their opinions about where science and religion might possibly agree, and collide. As part of this, students can also put their current knowledge of the world’s largest religions to the test, and share more about how important their religion or personal beliefs are to them. Lessons will also explore the links between the subject and religion, and the role religion has played in shaping key events and developments linked to that subject.

The college community is diverse, and our students create friendships with students of a wide range of faiths and none. Taking part in World Religion Day is a chance to deepen their understanding across a number of religions, and build further understanding and respect about differing views.

Catherine Cushnie, Assistant Principal comments: “Research suggests that there may be up to 4,000 different religions around the world and we are very proud of how our young people are part of a community with diverse beliefs. Every student can be who they are at HNC, and World Religion Day is a chance for us to reflect on the importance of respecting others. Religion can cultivate peace and understanding, but has also been a factor in many current and historical conflicts. By creating safe spaces where students can celebrate their own faith, learn about that of others including why some people are of no faith, our students leave us with the ability to respect and empathise with others, even where views on religion may be significantly different from their own.”

HNC students can see Teams for further information, and visit the Junction during lunch tomorrow, Thursday 16 January.
