Thinking of pursuing a career in the sports industry? Are you interested in the science behind sporting success, such as how good nutrition boosts results? Then Applied Sport and Exercise Science is the course for you!
The topics you study will prepare you for a varied range of roles and degree level courses, and ensure you are prepared for your future in this vibrant and rewarding sector. This is a 2 A Level equivalent course that can be studied alongside another subject as part of a blended programme, so you can build the perfect study programme to support your future ambitions.
You'll need to meet the entry criteria for your chosen pathway and a grade 4 within GCSE Science grades or a pass in a vocational Level 2 Science qualification.

If you opt for the 2 A Level equivalent, you will cover the following topics:
- Functional anatomy
- Applied psychology
- Coaching for performance and fitness
- Physical activity for individual and group-based exercise
- Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise Science

You’ll be supported to grow inside and outside of the classroom and expand your horizons. Through interactive activities such as group work, role play and presentations, you will improve your self-confidence and communication skills – both of which are essential in the world of work.
You’ll also benefit from various opportunities to gain additional qualifications in areas including coaching and fitness. Our state-of-the-art facilities including Sports Barn, onsite Fitness Suite, Sports Laboratory and outdoor pitches provide you with some unique opportunities to stretch and challenge your skills. You’ll be inspired by visiting guest speakers who will help you understand just where your studies can take you.
You’ll gain valuable sector experience throughout your time on the course, combining your classroom learning with high quality industry work placements, trips and visits. Our students have developed their skills, knowledge and built their Cultural Capital through a wide range of activities. Our students have benefitted from:
- International work experience opportunities
- Visits to key institutions such as the English Institute of Sport
- A chance to put their skills and physical abilities to the test at Rokt activity centre and a range of physical activities
- The chance to undertake additional career relevant qualifications in areas such as coaching and fitness
Assessment is via a mix of presentations, group work and assignments and externally assessed exams.
This course supports you to pursue a range of career paths in the industry. Many of our students progress on to university degrees that can lead to careers in Nutrition, Sports Therapy, Sports Analysis, Teaching and Sports Psychology – there are a vast range of opportunities which our industry links will help you to explore. This course can provide access to the workplace too, including apprenticeships.
