Our BTEC Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science qualification is available in a number of options. Your choice will depend on your future career plans. This qualification supports a huge range of careers in the sports industry, and progression to degree level study.

Do you want to pursue a career in the sports industry? Are you interested in the science behind sporting success, such as how nutrition improves results? The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science could be for you!

As a three A Level equivalent, this is a full time study programme and is therefore ideal if you have decided on a career in the sports industry. You will cover all of the topics offered by our 2 A Level equivalent course plus additional topics.

One grade 4 within GCSE Single or Combined Science grades or a pass in a vocational Level 2 Science qualification. Grade 4 in GCSE PE or a pass in a vocational equivalent, if taken. General entry criteria also applies.

The topics you study will prepare you for a varied range of roles and degree level courses, and ensure you are prepared for your future in this vibrant and rewarding sector. The range of topics you will study increases in line with the qualification level of your studies, but includes:

• Functional anatomy

• Applied psychology

• Biomechanics

• Coaching for performance and fitness

• Lab and Field Based Fitness Testing

• Nutrition for Sports Performance

You’ll gain experience of the sector by combining your learning in the classroom with direct industry experience through high quality work placements, trips and visits. Current students have developed their skills and knowledge through placements at Opta Sports, visits to the English Institute of Sport and physical activity at Rokt and outdoor challenge centres.

The course has a strong practical element, which you will complete in our state of the art facilities including our Fitness Suite, Sports Barn, Sports Hall and Fitness Lab.

Through your experience of practical activities and academic theory you will develop your self-confidence and communication skills. Group work, role plays and presentations will offer you the chance to develop as a student and prepare you for your next step.

There’s plenty of opportunities outside of your studies. You’ll get lots of opportunities to gain additional qualifications such as your coaching and Fitness qualifications. 

Assessment is via presentations, group work and assignments and externally assessed exams. Your work will be graded at pass, merit or distinction giving you an overall grade at the end of the course. 

This course supports you to pursue a range of career paths in the sport and exercise industry. Many of our students progress on to university degrees that can lead to careers in sports therapy, sports analysis, teaching and leisure centre management – there are a vast range of opportunities which our industry links will help you explore.
