HNC recently welcomed representatives from the Ministry of Justice for an enlightening guest lecture focusing on the prison and sentencing frameworks that the UK’s Criminal Justice System operates within.
In Criminology, students explore themes relating to crime and punishment, and the driving factors that lie behind criminal activity. In this informative guest lecture, the group enjoyed hearing from the Ministry of Justice, who shared more about the UK’s prison and sentencing systems. During the lecture, the students discovered how the Ministry designs policies that are then used to advise government, who in turn use this information to create the framework within which the Criminal Justice System operates. During the lecture, the group heard more about the broad range of variables that are considered when creating such policies, and how key decisions are made when advising on appropriate sentences.
The group also heard more about the UK’s prison system, and the importance placed on rehabilitation, including how they are keeping prisoners safe, and how prohibited activities – such as illegal drug taking – are stopped. More information was also shared about the wide variety of roles available within the Ministry of Justice and wider Civil Service, promoting a range of possible routes for those who are hoping to progress to a related career.
Adam Midgely, Teacher of Criminology, comments “Thank you to the Ministry of Justice who delivered an incredibly useful guest lecture to our Criminology students, who study a wide range of criminological theories, and the impact that crime and punishment has on wider society. It was fascinating to hear more about the policies behind the sentencing framework in the UK, and the group now have a much deeper understanding of how sentencing and prisons work, which will undoubtedly support their success in their upcoming assessments”.
