HNC’s Year 12 A Level Mathematics and Physics students recently joined the University of Huddersfield’s Department of Engineering for an immersive experience which saw the group undertaking a variety of hands-on workshops to stretch and challenge their engineering skills!
The University of Huddersfield’s Department of Engineering is home to state-of-the-art facilities and subject experts with extensive links to local and national engineering industries. In this specially designed day, students from across HNC’s A Level Mathematics and Physics groups were invited to experience ‘a day in the life’ of an engineering student at the University, taking part in a number of workshops, and enjoying a tour of the facilities, including the automotive and manufacturing workshops and the undergraduate laboratories.
On the day, students were tasked with taking part in degree level workshops that focused on three areas of engineering – electrical engineering, civil engineering and aeronautical engineering – putting a wide variety of their skills to the test. During these challenging sessions, students built a ‘whack a mole’ style game, tested the torsional strength of materials under pressure, and investigated the lift produced by a wing in the University’s wind tunnel. The group also had the opportunity to discuss their progression plans and discover more about the different degree pathways would best support their next steps.
Chris Smith, Head of Faculty (Enrich), comments “Thanks to the University of Huddersfield for a brilliantly educational and engaging day! At HNC students studying for A Levels in Mathematics and Physics learn about the fundamental theories of Engineering, and in these hands- on workshops, were able to put those theories to the test in the University’s state-of-the-art facilities. These degree-level sessions were challenging and have provided our students with a wider understanding of the lessons learned in the classroom, which in turn will support them to achieve highly in their upcoming assessments and exams. The workshops were particularly helpful as they have showcased the difference between the wide variety of undergraduate engineering based degree programmes, helping students to make informed decisions about their future career plans”.
