In the next in our series of alumni stories, we speak to former student Rhianne about her journey from A Levels to her career in film working on Hollywood blockbusters!
At HNC, students are supported to achieve the life-changing qualifications that will lead to their dream career. Opportunities for students to become their best selves take place both inside and outside of the classroom, and in our latest in a series of alumni success stories, Rhianne shares more about how her journey from HNC helped to shape her career…
What did you study at HNC?
I studied A Level Psychology, French and Spanish between 2009-2011. Looking back I wish I given a more thought to the subjects I chose for my Level 3 study programme – studying TV and Film at College would certainly have supported me during my degree!
What were your next steps after College?
After HNC, I progressed to the University of Kent to study Film Studies and French. Following my undergraduate degree, I then went on to obtain a Masters in International Film Production from De Montfort University. I was also able to undertake studies at Pinewood Studios whilst they were making Solo: A Star Wars Story as well as Star Wars ep9 and Maleficent 2!
What are you doing now?
Currently I am a freelancer, working on my own writing. I am part of the Channel 4 New Writers Scheme, and I am in the process of developing a pilot script. I also freelance script read for various competitions and production companies. Since I completed my studies I have worked on various projects including Emmerdale and All Creatures Great and Small.
Did you always have an ambition to work in your current sector?
I have always wanted to work in Film and TV and chose a related degree to study. I also made sure I focused on regional opportunities to get a foot into the door and this has opened up wider opportunities.
Do you have any advice for current students who are hoping to progress to the industry?
My advice would be to make sure it’s fully what you want to do. It’s nowhere near as glamorous as you think it’s going to be, it’s a lot of hard work with long hours, a lot of rejection but it’s incredibly rewarding and creative. Working in TV and Film equips you with a variety of skills both personally and professionally which some people underestimate.
In Year 11? We are now approaching our interview evenings – look out for your invitation. Don’t forget at this you’ll have the chance to discuss how the qualifications you choose at HNC can lead you to your dream career.
