Students from the College’s Year 12 A Level and Applied Law courses have recently taken part in an insight day at local commercial law firm, Schofield Sweeney, to discover more about how they can progress to their dream careers in Law.
Schofield Sweeney, an award-winning commercial law firm with offices in Bradford, Huddersfield and Leeds, offer full service legal advice to both businesses and individuals across a wide-range sectors, and recently attended our summer careers event. In this special opportunity, students from HNC’s Law courses were invited to apply for an insight experience day at the firm, which saw successful students take part in an informative day focusing on progression to a career in Law, with a particular focus on apprenticeships.
Students interested in the opportunity were tasked with writing a professional cover letter, stating their reasons for applying and outlining their skills and interests, with successful candidates invited to attend one of two insight days at the firm’s Huddersfield office. On the day, the groups enjoyed a welcome talk from the team, took part in a range of interactive research tasks which saw them explore ‘real-world’ legal scenarios, and discovered more about a day in the life of a commercial lawyer. Students also took part in a CV and application workshop and enjoyed a Q&A with the team, which included some invaluable hints and tips for securing an apprenticeship in Law.
Liam Sharp, Teacher of Law, comments “Many of our Law students aspire to work in Commercial Law, and this opportunity to take part in an insight day was a genuinely valuable first step into discovering how to progress to a career in Law, a famously competitive sector. Degree level apprenticeships are an ever more popular route into the sector, and on the day, the students were able to find out more about the opportunities available at Schofield Sweeney. Throughout the process, students were expected to approach this experience in a professional manner and make the most of the opportunities that this day has presented, building on their industry and work-based skills. Thanks go to Schofield Sweeney for supporting our future lawyers’ ambitions!”.
