HIGH SOCIETY DRAMA: HNC’S A LEVEL DRAMA AND THEATRE STUDENTS ENJOY BLACK TIE BALL PERFORMANCE

HNC’s A Level Drama and Theatre Study students recently enjoyed a performance at the Lawrence Batley Theatre (LBT) as part of their wider learning to discover more about the playwright John Godber, who wrote the acclaimed comedy-drama, Black Tie Ball.

John Godber is an award-winning British playwright known for creating observational comedies. A Level Drama and Theatre Studies students study Godber in the first year of their qualification, and this year were lucky enough to see one of his best-known plays ‘Black Tie Ball’ which recently toured at The LBT. The play depicts the events of a back tie event that took place in a high-end hotel, with the tale being told with great hilarity by the overworked hotel staff. Themes include class and ambition, and showcases how different the reality can be from the façade.

For Year 12s currently studying Godber and one of his other plays, Bouncers, this was an opportunity to better understand the playwright’s style, providing a wider context to their studies. For students in Year 13 who are currently undertaking their personal studies into a practitioner so that they can be inspired to create their own plays, this was an invaluable opportunity to seek inspirational for their own work, both on and off the stage.

Emma Laws, Teacher of A Level Drama and Theatre Studies comments “In A Level Drama and Theatre Studies, students work on both their presence on stage and their ability to create and direct a piece of theatre. We are incredibly lucky to have experienced one of our studied playwright’s comedy-dramas in real life at The LBT – a true learning to life moment where our students could see the lessons learned in the classroom come to life on the stage. Experiencing live theatre is magical, and I know that for our Year 13 students especially, they will be able to use this experience to inspire their own performance pieces”.
