HNC COMMUNITY CELEBRATES WORLD KINDNESS DAY WITH LAUNCH OF ONE BIG FAMILY APPEAL

Today is World Kindness Day, and HNC has revealed that once again our College community will be creating shoeboxes packed with hygiene items and festive treats for local homeless and vulnerably housed people. The college community will also be collecting toys for families fleeing domestic violence.

Last week Annie, a volunteer from One Big Family, joined our Student Council to share more about the exceptional work the charity does locally, and how the Christmas shoebox appeal works. The group also heard about how the donations support the charity’s work beyond the festive season, and how many of the individuals One Big Family work with look forward to the shoeboxes all year round.

Our Student Council will now be leading a special project encouraging everyone to get involved to help the College create as many packs as possible – these boxes contain a range of basic hygiene items such as shower gel, soap, socks, underwear and baby wipes, along with a few festive treats such as chocolates, handcream and food that can easily be prepared and eaten. The College will also be collecting new toys for all ages.

One of HNC’s values is empathy, and students are expected to be reflective, considerate and responsible. The One Big Family appeal is a perfect opportunity for us to come together to make a huge difference locally while exploring the science of kindness – there is no obligation for our community to donate, and we highlight how helping to spread the world and offering time to assist with sorting of boxes is also a way students can take part and give back. The appeal is also an opportunity for our community to reflect on how we can make a difference to those who may be experiencing challenging situations and the importance of empathy.

Marcus Smith-Connor, Principal comments: “Today is World Kindness Day, and the perfect day to announce we will once again be running the HNC One Big Family appeal. Our students are given regular opportunities to experience the power of kindness and empathy in action, and explore how when we live by these values we are actively creating a better world to live in. We also work to help our young people understand there is a genuine science behind kindness – not only by being kind and considerate will we feel happier and healthier, but it also creates a ripple effect – scientists believe that one act of kindness can have a positive impact on up to 125 people! Our Student Council has some exciting plans for this year’s appeal, and for helping all of our community to learn more about the powerful work One Big Family do in our local area. We are really looking forward to seeing our College family make a difference this festive period.”
