HNC is delighted to reveal that parents/carers of current students can now access a brand new Parent/Carer Hub, a once stop shop of information, resources and advice that will help them to engage with, and stay involved, in their son/daughter’s journey at HNC.
While students at HNC are transitioning to adulthood and are expected to be independent learners, the College fully recognises the role parents/carers play in this journey, and how effective parent/carer engagement is key to ensuring students achieve their full potential and become their best selves.
All parents/carers who are named as contacts can create their own individual CEDAR accounts and this provides a ‘finger on the pulse’ summary of how a student is doing in terms of progress, attendance and behaviour. Parents/carers are encouraged to log in at least weekly to look at updates, and review any commendations or concerns that may have been logged. Parents/carers also receive regular bulletins which give a glimpse into daily College life, along with events such as a welcome evening and regular Parent Consultation Evenings.
Our Parent/Carer Hub is an exciting new addition which allows a parent/carer to understand and learn more about the HNC experience, and provide tools and resources that will help them to support their son/daughter. The one stop shop gives insights into how our values are a lived daily reality, and a range of resources such as practical guides to CEDAR and other systems that parents/carers can use to access information that will help them to stay involved. It also provides parent/carer friendly resources around core topics such as wellbeing, coping with exam stress and discussing their son/daughter’s vision for the future – and new content will be regularly added throughout the academic year.
Marcus Smith-Connor, Principal, comments: “Our student community are on the journey to adulthood, and everything we do is about making sure they can take their next step with confidence. We fully recognise the key role parents/carers play in making sure their son/daughter becomes the very best they can be. However, many parents will tell us it can sometimes be difficult to get their son or daughter talking about what experiences they have been enjoying, or that they don’t always feel confident asking how they can help if they have not taken the subject at post-16 themselves.”
“However, research shows that being actively involved by asking questions and discussing what’s been happening at College makes an evidenced impact on achievement. Our Parent/Carer Hub provides our parent/carer community with the tools and knowledge to connect and get involved, irrespective of any specialist knowledge. Whether they want to discuss a VESPA target logged on CEDAR and the steps to achieving this, understand more about what enrichment looks like at HNC, support their son/daughter with some exam related stress, or simply to get a glimpse into what the College day looks like, the hub offers a one stop shop of resources, support and advice that will help them to do this. We hope that our parents/carers find this new resource valuable, and we look forward to hearing their feedback ”
All parents/carers listed as the first next of kin contact on CEDAR have been sent a log in via the Parent/Carer Bulletin.
Secondary contacts who wish to receive a duplicate copy of this bulletin and a log in can request this by emailing news@huddnewcoll.ac.uk and confirming the student’s details. Please note that the College can only issue duplicate bulletins to contacts listed on CEDAR, to the email address registered with HNC.
