HNC’s Creative and Digital Faculty has recently welcomed Lewis Guarniere, senior lecturer in Computer Animation and Visual Effects at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) to share more about working in the UK visual effects industry.
Applied Digital Games, Applied IT and A Level Computer Science students enjoyed a fascinating guest lecture exploring the UK visual effects scene and the routes that students can take to progress to a related career. Lewis Guarniere, who currently lectures in Computer Animation and Visual Effects at MMU, spent a decade working in the creative media industry, creating visual effects for films, commercials and music videos. Throughout the course of his career, Lewis worked on some high-profile projects, from the Hunger Games films to the Evian roller skating babies commercial to a music video the The Killers, and shared more about how he brought these projects to life and the techniques he used to create high-level stand out visuals.
Students also heard more about progressing to university to study Computer Animation and Visual Effects, what they could expect from the course and where it could lead to, and what life as an MMU student would look like. There was time at the end for the group to ask Lewis questions and hear his top tips for securing a first role in a competitive industry and the skills needed to succeed.
Joe Norton, Teacher of IT and Director of Independent Learning shares more “Students studying for a qualification in Computer Science, Digital Games and IT can progress to an incredibly broad range of careers post-18. Hearing from Lewis – who has enjoyed a long career in the UK visual effects industry and now lectures at MMU – has showcased an exciting progression area where students can blend their passion for art, computing and mathematics. Hearing from someone who has successfully navigated a competitive industry and worked at the very highest levels has no doubt motivated our students to aim high when it comes to their own progression plans. Thank you to Lewis for joining us and inspiring the next generation of visual effects artists!”
Students at HNC enjoy an enriching experiencing both inside and outside the classroom. Join us on Wednesday 12 November at our Open Event to find out more.
