HNC is delighted to reveal that the College’s Cricket Academy has recently secured a win against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), finishing on 161 for 7 after the winning boundary, following a very close match played at Honley Cricket Club.
MCC is the world’s most active cricket club, with thousands of experienced players taking part in more than 400 matches annually. This year, the HNC Cricket Academy team – which takes part in a match against an MCC team every year- were invited to play the club at Honley Cricket grounds, playing a MCC team consisting of ex Bradford Premier League players. This is always a difficult game for the academy team, as this annual match is a rare opportunity for the team to play timed cricket with MCC playing an uncontested toss, meaning team HNC must wait for MCC to declare before batting themselves.
MCC, who declared at 158-7 twenty minutes before dinner, left team HNC just a few short minutes to bat before the break. Zeb B for HNC bowled 10 overs, 2 maidens, and 6 wickets for 18 runs at the start of the first innings, with his performance earning him a fully paid trip to Lords in 2026 to watch the England test match. Even after a brilliant start by Zeb, the team had just 90 minutes remaining after the break to secure over 140 runs for the win. Despite the uphill battle ahead of them, the team pulled together, with James T and captain, Logan S, scoring a fantastic 109 runs between them. After his earlier success, Zeb ended the game with 1 over to spare, taking the team to victory and finishing the match on 161 for 7.
Jack Hendy, Head Cricket Coach, comments, “What an absolutely fantastic match! Competing against MCC is always a highlight of our calendar, and a genuinely challenging game for our Cricket Academy team. As well as competing against professional players, this is an annual match that is played to a different format than usual. I am delighted for the team, who worked collaboratively and remained determined, resilient and motivated to bring home the win for HNC. Congratulations to Zeb who was recognised with the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ award, which was truly well-deserved. Thank you to MMC for such a challenging game and to Honley Cricket Club for hosting the match”.
