HNC  TO TURN YELLOW FOR #WORLDMENTALHEALTHDAY

Tomorrow (Friday 10 October) is World Mental Health Day. Our College community will be coming together to explore why it is so important to talk, and how we can all employ strategies that promote and support good mental health. We’re also asking students and staff to join the nation in wearing something yellow to demonstrate their belief that everyone should have good mental health, and access to support if needed.

Staff and students will be wearing yellow while taking part in a range of activities including meditation, 5 a side football, badminton and table tennis which will help students to explore the power of physical activity in supporting good mental health. There will also be tea and chat in the Junction, and specific resources that students can access to support mental health wellbeing, and ideas about how small acts of kindness can boost our wellbeing.

World Mental Health Day is a an international event, and this year’s theme centres on the mental health impact of repeated exposure to news coverage and crises and conflicts. As part of this, the World Mental Health Foundation is also highlighting the importance of people being able to access services in catastrophes and emergencies. Strategies to support mental wellbeing and develop resilience is at the heart of wellbeing at HNC, and something that we explore with students all year round.

We’re encouraging everyone to share how and why it is good to talk by sharing their photos of the day including yellow outfits and accessories – these can be emailed to news@huddnewcoll.ac.uk

Tom Smith, Enlighten Lead comments: “Developing and maintaining good mental wellbeing is of course of critical importance every day. However, World Mental Health Day is an opportunity for our community to come together to openly discuss and address the stigma that might exist around mental health, and play our part in making it easy to talk to someone if needed. Physical wellbeing is scientifically proven to support good mental health, and we’re encouraging everyone to join one of our activities. We’re also providing some fantastic resources and ideas to take away, produced by our Student Wellbeing team who are here for students throughout the academic year. We can’t wait to turn HNC yellow tomorrow, and stand with others around the world in ending the stigma that may exist around mental health.”
