HNC WELCOMES HTAFC FOR SPORTS PHYSIO GUEST LECTURE

HNC’s Sport and Health Faculty recently welcomed Huddersfield Town Football Club’s (HTAFC) Academy Physio, Patrick Cassidy, for a guest lecture attended by the College’s Year 13 full-time Applied Sport and Exercise Science students.

In Applied Sport and Exercise Science, students explore a wide range of topics relating to nutrition, physiology, coaching and exercise. In the final year of their studies, students study Sports Injuries, a topic that explores areas such as risk factors, prevention and rehabilitation. Patrick, who currently works as the Academy Physio for HTAFC, shared more about how his role supports players to stay fit and healthy whilst playing elite level football, and how he helps players who have been injured to return to the game at their previous level of fitness and skill. As well as sharing more about his own role at the Club, Patrick also shared more about the wide variety of medical professionals employed by the club, and how these different roles work together to support the team’s wider success.

As well as exploring what the day in the life of a physio working for an elite team looks like, Patrick also shared more about his own career path, and the routes he took to secure his dream role working for HTAFC. The group were invited to ask their own questions at the end of the session – and heard how Patrick’s dream career started right here at HNC as a former student of Applied Sport and Exercise Science!

Joanne Robson, Teacher of Applied Sport and Exercise Science, comments “Students studying for a qualification in Applied Sport and Exercise Science can progress to a wide range of careers, including Physiotherapy. It was a pleasure to welcome Patrick back to HNC to share more about his journey since completing his Level 3 studies, right through to securing his dream position at HTAFC as Academy Physio. This inspiring session has showcased what a day in the life of a physio truly looks like, helping our current cohort to decide on the right route and pathway for them post-18. Patrick shared more about the motivation, accountability and commitment needed to progress to a career in physiotherapy and is a shining example of how working hard and saying yes to opportunities is the best way to ‘become your best self’.
