JOURNEY TO VETERINARY SCIENCE: ELLI SHARES MORE ABOUT WORK PLACEMENT EXPERIENCE

Here at HNC, students are supported to progress to their dream career through a package of enriching and enlightening experiences. In this story, we share more about Elli’s work placement experience with a local veterinary practice and how the experience is helping to shape her vision for the future.

Elli, who is studying A Level Biology, Chemistry and Fine Art, has recently undertaken a week’s work placement with local veterinary practice, Donaldson’s Vets, who run a number of practices across Yorkshire. During the week, Elli, who was based at Donaldson’s flagship surgery in Almondbury which offers a 24hr service and world class facilities, was invited to shadow the team across a range of veterinary appointments and surgeries. During her time spent with the veterinary team, Elli spent time supporting the team to look after a variety of animals, from pet dogs, cats and rabbits, to the more exotic, including a wild hawk! During her time spent at Donaldson’s, Elli observed treatments ranging from simple immunisations to more complex surgeries, including a stem cell extraction, which will then be used to treat an older dog struggling with arthritis.

At the end of the week’s experience, Elli, who hopes to progress to a degree in Veterinary Science after HNC, applied for a permanent work experience placement and was successfully appointed, beating over 30 other hopefuls who had applied for the position. Elli will now be working with Donaldson’s once a week to gain further experience to support her future UCAS application. Elli comments “I have had such a brilliant time at Donaldson’s. I have always hoped to become a Vet, and the experience at Donaldson’s has cemented my vision for the future. During my placement I was able to take part in some amazing experiences and I enjoyed working with the patients and their owners. I can’t wait to continue my work experience and further develop my knowledge of Veterinary Science. Thank you to Donaldson’s for helping to make my career ambitions a reality”.

Rebecca King, Employer Liaison Officer, comments “We encourage all our students to undertake work experience alongside their studies. A work placement can not only help a student to decide on a suitable career path, it’s also an experience that can help a student to stand out from the crowd. I am incredibly proud of Elli for her hard work and enthusiasm and for securing a long-term work placement that will undoubtedly support her career ambitions in the future”.

All students at HNC can book an appointment to discuss work experience – please see Teams for further details.
