A Level Media Studies students have recently returned from an enlightening visit to London to immerse themselves in the media capital of the UK and explore some of the UK’s most loved landmarks and the impact London has on popular culture.
In A Level Media Studies, students explore the world around them through the perspective of the media, and discover how the world as we know it is shaped, from the social media we consume to the articles we read in the press. In this immersive residential visit to the Capital, students from across the course explored areas including Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, as well as visiting some of London’s most famous landmarks, from Buckingham Palace to Big Ben. The group, who stayed in Bloomsbury, enjoyed dinner at the world-famous Hard Rock Café before heading over to the Shaftesbury Theatre to watch Mrs Doubtfire, a comedy musical based on the best-selling classic film starring Robin Williams.
After a busy first day, the group headed north to Leavesden to visit the Warner Brother’s Studio to take part in the Harry Potter Studios tour, where students explored the sets used in some of the films’ most iconic scenes including Diagon Alley, the Great Hall and the Forbidden Forest, as well as taking part in interactive sessions that saw the group learn some of the tips and tricks directors used to create the much loved film series. During the experience, students were also able to discover more about the props and costumes used on set, and the importance of creating pieces true to the books and how this was key to the films’ critical acclaim.
The trip, which was designed to build on the group’s understanding of the importance of popular culture within the media, was a huge success. Sanah Yaseen, Teacher of A Level Media Studies, comments “Our annual trip to the Capital to soak up the excitement and vibrancy of London is a highlight of the HNC calendar. This is a valuable experience for our A Level Media Studies students who can experience first hand the cultural impact that London has on the media and entertainment. This year we chose to watch the highly rated comedy musical, Mrs Doubtfire, a production that has brought a classic film to a whole new generation. This was such a genuinely enlightening visit for our students, who have not only built on their knowledge of entertainment within the media, they have also developed their cultural capital as they explored some of the UK’s most iconic landmarks. Thank you to our students who were true ambassadors for the College”.
