As a student you will be settling into life at HNC, whether you have recently joined us as Year 12 student or are returning in Year 13. As part of supporting you during this journey, we are sharing our top tips for making the most out of your first term in College, and how by accessing the services available to you at HNC can prepare you for your future studies and help you to become your best self in the long term. This week, we’re looking at the College’s Aspire tutorials – an essential part of every student’s study programme here at HNC – and how by making the most of these sessions, you’ll become your best self.
Each student at HNC is assigned a Progress Tutor, and it is our Progress Tutors who deliver the College’s Aspire curriculum. Over the course of your time at HNC, your Progress Tutor will support you through a range of one to one meetings throughout the year, and they are also the first point of contact for your parents/carers. Aspire tutorials are specially designed to support you to develop a range of knowledge and skills outside of your study programme, and there are four core themes that you will explore during your time at HNC: Being a successful student, health and well-being, relationships and living in the wider world. Fully engaging with the Aspire experience is one of the key ways we prepare you for life beyond HNC – below we share the top five ways Aspire will support you to become your best self!
Supporting your transition from school to college
Moving from school to college can be a big step – not only is it a change in environment and expectations, but it’s also a transitional stage of life as you move into adulthood. Our Aspire sessions are designed to support this transition, help you to form and maintain positive relationships, and provide you with the opportunity to develop the wider skills that will allow you to achieve the life changing qualifications you come to HNC to achieve.
Helping you to make every day count
Aspire sessions will support you to develop knowledge, confidence and skills that can be applied across the curriculum, whatever subjects you may be studying. This foundational knowledge genuinely supports you to make every day of learning at HNC count.
Supporting you to effectively plan your next steps
When students join HNC, some have a clear vision for the future, and some may be unsure! Whatever category you fall into, your Progress Tutor will support you to research where you want to go next- whether that’s university, an apprenticeship or the world of work. You’ll explore a variety of different progression routes, discover which ones are right for you, and plan how you will achieve your goals.
Preparing you for life beyond HNC
The Aspire curriculum supports students to explore the modern and diverse world we live, encourages healthy debate and opinion sharing, and helps students to develop cultural knowledge. This approach to wider learning will help you to analyse and understand global and intercultural issues, enhancing your readiness for your future career and successes.
Helping you to become your best self
Finally, our Aspire sessions pull together all elements of HNC’s curriculum intent – to educate, enrich and enlighten our students. Through a specially designed curriculum, the Aspire sessions will support you to become the best possible version of yourself, building skills, resilience, confidence and character to thrive in the world beyond HNC.
Jess Butterfield, Senior Progress Tutor, shares more “HNC’s Aspire sessions make a genuine difference to those who study at HNC. As well as providing an additional layer of support, Progress Tutors deliver a specially designed curriculum that guides our students to develop skills far beyond the academic. Aspire is a key way in which we ensure that students develop the VESPA & OPTICS skills that employers and universities are looking for when it comes to next steps – but it is also an essential way in which we support students to develop important life skills that will benefit them far beyond their academic journeys. It is a privilege to work with our students and see them engage with the opportunities on offer here at HNC, and support them in their journey to becoming their best selves”.
