Arranged to officially celebrate the opening of the £100,000 surface recently installed at HNC, the tournament was contested by sides from Salendine Nook High School, Westend FC, the HNC staff, and the heavily-tipped HNC Sports department.
And against all the odds, it was the hastily assembled staff team consisting of Media teachers Dan Hanlon and Gary Eastwood, Sociology teacher Alan Dobson, Science teacher Mick Callaghan, Marketing Manager Scott Goodacre, Swedish exchange students Elias Augustin and Philip Hakansson, and ex-HNC Academy student Alex Thomas who scored 11 goals and clinched the highly contested cup.
Despite seeing Callaghan leave the pitch due to hamstring injury in the first game, the HNC Staff rallied together to beat their colleagues from Sport 5-2 – going 3-0 up inside the opening five minutes.
That victory was sandwiched between a 1-0 win over Salendine Nook and a 5-3 success against Westend, who played with a man extra due to Callaghan’s unfortunate layoff.
After winning all three games and only conceding five goals – thanks in no small part to the two Swedish emergency loan signings – new staff member Eastwood graciously accepted the 3G Cup on behalf of his team from the Head of Sport, PE and Travel Gabriel Mellor.
On behalf of everyone at Huddersfield New College our thanks go to the teams from Westend and Salendine Nook who gave up time on Friday night to attend, as well as all staff and students here at HNC who agreed to take part.
The cup was a fantastic success, and we look forward to defending it again this time next year!
