2016 saw HNC Library Manager & College Librarian, Rebecca Hill, host the Reading Agency’s literacy boosting programme, Reading Ahead, for a third year at the college. 12 HNC students completed the challenge to read & review six things over a set period of time. All benefited from the experience as it helps introduce them to new genres & authors as well as encouraged them to think about what they liked about their reading choices.
Some feedback comments from students:
"It gave me chance to read a range of books that I wouldn’t have read before. I would definitely recommend taking part."
"I’ve started reading more books as a destresser and now I enjoy it more."
"It gave me motivation to start reading again. I can’t thank it enough."
"This set me goals to be able to sit down and read, not just for recollection, but to gain new knowledge and enjoy it. I learnt more about the genres I am interested in as well and have grown to like and also dislike some other genres."
English A-Level student, Judith Webster, shared her experiences of participating in the programme along with a brief review of her six reads on the Reading Ahead Blog (the 2nd HNC student to do this after Shania Howes earlier in the year). You can read her blog article and learn about how it has helped her attitude towards reading and how it inspired Judith to set up her own book blog - http://readingahead.org.uk/blog/judith-webster-shares-her-six-reads .’
