A Level Further Maths students from HNC took part in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust’s (UKMT) Senior Maths Team Challenge, held at Manchester University.  The best and brightest from sixth formers from across the North-West battled it out across a number of different rounds, testing their problem-solving skills and ability to apply mathematical thinking as part of a team.
Representing HNC were Marc Laban, Ted Lane, Umar Nadeem and Zoe Wolstenholme.  Zoe said, “The Maths Team Challenge was really fun - very difficult, but with some really interesting puzzles.  It was pretty intense competing against students from over twenty other schools and colleges, but Tom looked after us and helped make the day even more enjoyable.  It’s a great experience to write about on my UCAS personal statement as I want to study Maths at university -  I’d recommend the experience to anyone who loves maths!”

Tom Beddard, Teacher of Maths comments: “This was a great experience for students who enjoyed putting their skills to the test in a fun and challenging way, taking their mathematical aptitude to a higher level. It is a great example of the opportunities available to students on this course, and a great way for our students to celebrate their passion for this fascinating subject.”
Students thinking of studying A Level Further Maths at HNC next year now have more options than ever, with the option of taking the subject at AS Level as a fourth subject, and then continuing to A Level Further Maths.  Studied alongside A Level Maths, Further Maths is perfect for students who, like Ted, Umar, Marc and Zoe, love applying difficult maths to real-world puzzles.  Come to the upcoming Information Evening on January 21st to find out more.
