Huddersfield New College hosted a glittering awards ceremony at Huddersfield Town Hall last night (Monday 17th December) to celebrate the success of the most recent graduates, the Class of 2018.
Staff, Governors and a range of special guests including the Deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Mumtaz Hussain, welcomed back students and their guests who graduated this summer to present a range of awards.
Following a musical interlude by students Megan and Abigail, guest speaker Eorl Crabtree provided an amusing and inspiring talk about creating your own opportunities in life. Alongside two surprise guests from Huddersfield Town Association Football Club, Ryan Schofield and Isaac Mbenza, Eorl also helped to congratulate all of the prize winners.
Awards were presented for General Academic Achievement, Outstanding Academic Achievement, Individual Subject Achievement and Individual Subject Progress. The ceremony concluded with presentation of overarching awards, which are listed below, to recognise students who made outstanding contributions to both the College and local community, both personally and academically. Angela Williams OBE comments: “I was delighted to share with the hundreds of family and friends who filled the impressiveTown Hall that our Class of 2018 achieved outstanding academic results, with a perfect 100% pass rate at both A Level and on BTEC, and a 66% high grade rate (A*-B, or equivalent), placing them easily in the Top 12% nationally for student performance at advanced level. These collective results were celebrated, alongside the achievements of individual students such as Isaac, who after four years of study at HNC secured results which allowed him to take up his dream place at York University to read Politics, and Callan who inspired everyone at HNC with the positive and determined way he faced the challenge of academic study after a life-changing injury, to achieve high final grades and a place on the Foundation Degree in Sport at HNC (UCLAN accredited). The evening is all about celebrating the amazing academic achievements of our students, and these, alongside the personal qualities of Kindness, Friendship, Respect and Courage, developed during their time at HNC, will enable our Class of 2018 to move on from HNC to not only find success, but to make their world a better place for all too.”
