Huddersfield New College (HNC) has announced that the College’s Careers service has once again been awarded the Quality in Careers Standard. This national quality award confirms the quality of HNC's support for students, and reflects how they can access a range of services which enable them to achieve their career ambitions.

Students at HNC can access a comprehensive range of support tailored to their plans from individual appointments, workshops, access to events, support with university and job applications to a Meet the Professionals programme of visiting inspirational speakers, amongst much more. The awarding of the Quality in Careers Standard reflects that this support and opportunities are of the highest quality, and that students can access careers education, information and advice and guidance that enables them to successfully progress from College, and enjoy a successful start to their future career.

Achieving the award also provides external verification that HNC meets all the Gatsby Benchmarks.  Just before Campus closed due to the pandemic, an assessor visited to look at a range of areas including engagement with students and parents, links with employers, and work placement opportunities.

Report comments included: “A number of activities…raise aspirations and challenge stereotypes. The Aspire programme includes Oxbridge talks, preparation for MMI interviews for medical applicants, guest speakers, employers and visits to Universities. Student ambassador programs provide support, mentoring and role models for other students…They commented on feeling well prepared and supported. There is a very effective and committed Careers Leadership team, with shared responsibility and a highly valued, experienced, professional team of Careers Advisers.”

Tony Sturdy, Careers Manager says: “We are very proud to have been awarded the Quality in Careers Standard which confirms that our Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance meets the needs of our diverse student community and enables them to progress to the next chapter in their future career after graduating from our College. Our provision is designed to both and support and inspire students, and our industry and university links ensure our students can successfully progress to the next stage in their journey – whether this be a place at a world leading university, a specialist apprenticeship programme or entering the world of work. We work hard to develop and continuously improve what we do, and we would like to remind students that we continue to be here for them during our remote learning phase.”
