HNC’s Year 12 Musical Theatre students recently hosted Moorland’s Primary School for a special children’s theatre performance, inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic tale ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, in the College’s Boilerhouse Theatre.
In their first year of the qualification, students studying Applied Musical Theatre plan and host a performance as part of their assessed unit, Theatre for Children. In this unit, students apply the musical, acting and dancing skills developed in the classroom to create a piece of theatre suitable for a young audience, with the aim of inspiring interest in the performing arts and the theatre. In this specially designed performance, the group created and performed a pantomime based on the classic childhood book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with an all singing, all dancing performance that was designed to engage and excite the audience.
Taking place in the College’s Boilerhouse Theatre, the group hosted children from Moorlands Primary Academy in two ‘sold-out’ shows, complete with a specially designed set, costumes, and sound and lighting effects. Following the journey of the characters through the chocolate factory, the show explored themes such as greed, kindness, and the consequences of actions. The age-appropriate performance was designed to educate as well as entertain, with the audience encouraged to participate in a number of musical numbers and scenes, and of course, there were plenty of opportunities to shout ‘he’s behind you!’, ‘oh no he didn’t’ and ‘oh yes he did!’.
Mark Johnson, Teacher of Musical Theatre, comments “Our annual children’s theatre performance is one of the highlights of our calendar, and it was a pleasure to welcome back Moorlands to HNC to watch our pantomime for the third year running. We were delighted to host this special pantomime based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and our students put on a brilliant performance that had the children and the teachers on the edge of their seats and joining in! I am incredibly proud of the group who have worked hard to create a show that has no doubt inspired the next generation of performers”.
