HNC recently welcomed NHS Doctor, Dr Genevieve Durrans to HNC to deliver an enlightening talk to the College’s XL students who are planning to progress to Medicine.
Securing a place on Medicine at university is a competitive process, with many more students applying than there are available spaces. In this insightful session, Dr Durrans shared more about her journey from A Levels to her current role as a Gastroenterologist at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital and how our future Medics can place themselves in the best position to secure a place on their dream degree.
During the session, students had the opportunity to ask questions about the application process, discover more about the experience of attending medical school, and what to expect as they consider their own progression into Medicine. Dr Durrans discussed strategies to consider when applying to different Universities and offered valuable insights on preparing for medical school interviews – including further details on the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). During the session, Dr Durrans also addressed the challenges of balancing university life while attending lectures and gaining practical experience in patient care – and her top tips for juggling it all!
Catherine Cushnie, Assistant Principal Student Progression, comments “For students hoping to progress to a competitive degree such as Medicine, the opportunity to hear from a recent graduate about their journey from A Levels to their Foundation years of medicine is an invaluable opportunity. During this session our hopefully future Medics discovered more about the application process and how they can place themselves in the best possible position to secure a place on their dream degree. It was fascinating to hear more about Dr Durran’s journey through medical school and I know that our students have found the session genuinely motivating”.
