SAYING SALUT TO OPPORTUNITIES: A LEVEL FRENCH STUDENTS EXPLORE NEXT STEPS

A Level French students have recently taken part in a ‘Discover Modern Languages’ day at the University of Manchester, to learn more about where an A Level in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) could take them post-HNC.

Students who choose to study a MFL at A Level open up a wide range of opportunities for their next steps, and on this recent visit to the University of Manchester, HNC’s A Level French students discovered more about the variety of degrees available to them post-HNC, and the broad range of careers students completing a MFL degree can progress to long term. On the day, the group enjoyed a number of degree level workshops, where they put their language skills to the test. In one session, the group enjoyed a lecture on French Cinema titled ‘La Haine and beyond – the banlieue on film’, and in another session, the group explored Spanish and Latin American studies in a special cultural taster lecture. The group also took part in workshops where they practised wider language skills in Russian and Italian – truly putting their language skills to the test!

As well as taking part in the degree—level workshops, the group were also invited to learn more about life as a student at the University of Manchester, including a tour the University’s Oxford Road campus. The group also spent time with a panel of current Manchester students to hear about their experiences as a student, discovered more about the wide range of languages-based degree programmes available at the university, and took part in an enlightening Q&A with recent MFL graduates, who shared more about their careers post university.

Jenny Rome, Teacher of French, comments “Students studying a MFL really do have the world at their feet when it comes to their next steps! Our recent visit to the University of Manchester provided a wonderful insight into the broad range of degrees and careers that are supported by gaining a MFL A Level, and the group came away from the day genuinely inspired by the opportunities that will be available to them beyond HNC. Students studying A Level French at HNC explore topics including French culture, film and literature, and the university-level workshops they took part in on the day has provided a wider context to the lessons learned in the classroom, bringing a new perspective to their knowledge and further developing their language skills”.

University taster days are just one of the ways in which we support our MFL students to become their best selves. From immersive cultural experiences in Paris to taking part in enrichments such as the European Film Club, students at HNC can expect an enlightening experience.
