Black History Month celebrations at HNC are well underway, with students and staff from across the College celebrating our diverse and inclusive community throughout the month.
At HNC, students and staff enjoy a range of opportunities to engage with the College’s FREDIE (Fairness, Respect, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, Engagement) programme, with events, tutorials and initiatives taking place throughout the academic year. This October, HNC has been raising awareness of, and celebrating, Black History Month, a global event that showcases the impact of black culture across the years. This year’s theme, ‘standing firm in power and pride’ is a tribute to the progress of black communities across the world, and this month, the College’s Enlighten team have hosted a number of events, from hosting a black artist ‘listening party’ to our black culture icon event, where staff and students were asked to share more about the black icons who have inspired them.
As well as attending events, students from across the faculties have been exploring how influential black icons have positively impacted their subject, and exploring wider themes relating to black history in Aspire tutorials. Students are also invited to take part in the College’s Black History Month competition and can take part by producing a creative piece on the theme ‘standing firm in power and pride’, celebrating a black activist and/or black cultural icon.
Emily Briggs, Faculty Lead (Enrich) Social Science, comments “Black History Month is a wonderful celebration of the positive impact that black icons have had throughout history, and also a reminder of the barriers and challenges that our black communities have faced over the years. We are incredibly proud of our diverse and inclusive community at HNC, and hearing more about the influential black icons, leaders and artists that have inspired students and staff has been fantastic – I particularly enjoyed the listening party and sharing the playlist we created with our wider student body. Celebrating events such as Black History Month is a key way in which we foster a genuine understanding of the wider world and the diverse groups who contribute to society, and this approach genuinely supports students to develop their understanding of a modern and diverse Britain. Thank you to everyone who took part”.
There’s still time for students to enter our Black History Month competition – the deadline for submissions is Monday 20 October, and the winners will be announced on Friday 24 October. See the relevant Teams channel for further information.
