UNIVERSITY OF HUDDERSFIELD MASTERCLASS: A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

HNC’s A Level English Language and Literature students recently enjoyed a virtual masterclass on the critically acclaimed play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, led by Dr Roxanne Taylor from the University of Huddersfield, to develop their understanding of this classic play in preparation for upcoming examinations.

In A Level English Language and Literature, students explore a wide range of historical and contemporary texts and plays, developing their wider knowledge of the world around them. A key text that forms an integral part of the examination assessments is ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee Williams, which follows troubled teacher, Blanche, as she temporarily moves in with her sister in New Orleans, and explores themes such as gender, social class and power in 1940s America. In this inspiring session delivered by Dr Taylor, students enjoyed a university style lecture to deconstruct the play and were tasked with exploring and analysing the play’s themes and symbolism to degree level depth, learning more about the theoretical approach degree students utilise in their studies.

The session, which was designed to build on the group’s existing knowledge and develop analytical technique for their upcoming exams, is just one of the ways in which we support our students to reach their academic goals. Kaye Homer, Teacher of A Level English, comments “Students studying A Level English Language and Literature explore a variety of texts, developing their knowledge on a wide area of topics. In this degree level lecture, our students were challenged to think creatively on how they can best explore the themes within one of their assessed texts, ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. I know that our students will find this genuinely beneficial and that the lessons learnt in this session will help our students to become their best selves in their upcoming exams. Thank you to Dr Taylor from the University of Huddersfield for delivering such an engaging and enlightening guest lecture”.
