WORLD ENVIRONMENT WEEK AT HNC

World Environment Day saw millions around the globe pausing to focus on how we can better care for our planet and turn the tide against the devastating impact of climate change. As a College working to become a greener HNC and help our students understand the role they can play in shaping a better future, we have hosted our own World Environment Week to mark this international event.  

The week presented a special opportunity to pause, reflect and discuss how we can protect our planet now and for our future generations, and explore how small collective changes can have a huge impact on the current climate crisis. On Monday we held a climate discussion, offering scoops of free wildflower seeds – a really simple and easy way we can improve bio-diversity and provide bees, butterflies and other pollinators with food throughout the year. On Tuesday we planted our young saplings which we started growing during World Environment Week 2025.  Wednesday was our careers event, and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust came along to talk about volunteering, looking after our world and greener careers. On Thursday we made our homemade bird baths, and bee drinking stations with the help of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. 

Our local lunchtime litter pick has been rescheduled to Monday 15 June – if you’d like to join us please come along to Reception (litter pickers and hi-vis jackets will be supplied) 

Paul Yates, Faculty Lead, Enlighten comments: “As a College we want to ensure our young people understand the part they play in shaping a better future. One of the key ways we can do this is through looking after our world, and playing our part in tackling the climate crisis. We work to help our students explore how the smallest steps can make a big difference if we all take these collectively, and our students are encouraged to take both big and small steps for example by having a meat free day and taking part in opportunities such as the UCL Ocean Health Challenge.  World Environment Week has been a brilliant opportunity to discuss and explore what we can all do as a community, and we hope that many students will take the opportunity on Monday to improve the local environment by taking part in our litter pick. We’d also like to say a special thank you to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust for all of their support during this special week.”
