If you have applied to HNC your application will be reviewed in full when we have received your predicted grades and information regarding attendance, punctuality and behaviour. We will contact you regarding if your school will supply this on your behalf or you will need to supply this to us. This is requested after your application is submitted and after applications close on Friday 12 December.
For most applicants the outcome of the application review is an invitation to an Admissions Evening. We have a slightly different approach for these for applicants looking to join HNC in September 2026. However, our admissions criteria has not changed and decisions regarding conditional offers will continue to be made on the basis of predicted grades, attendance, behaviour, commitment and punctuality.
The following information shares some further detail and answers some FAQs – however, all applicants can be assured that further detailed information will be sent ahead of the evening. This page is to provide general information.
Admissions Evenings overview
Applicants will join us for one of two dates – Tuesday 3 March or Thursday 12 March. For the majority of applicants, the Admissions Evening will see them joining a guided group session which will involve completion of a series of activities which are designed to provide opportunity for an applicant to consider in detail how their chosen study programme will support them achieve their vision for the future and explore what they choose if they choose to join HNC.
Each activity will provide an applicant to undertake personal research in an environment that reflects how as a student at HNC they will learn collaboratively within a busy College environment. Full details will be issued to each applicant, but during the group session each applicant will look at aspects such as where their chosen study programme can take them, along with more practical aspects that support applicants to make the right decision for them such as journey times to College. Applicants will record their answers in their own words using an online form during the session.
The session will be led by HNC staff, with staff on hand to support, provide guidance and answer questions. However, this approach will genuinely support applicants to make informed choices about their next step and choice of post-16 provider by encouraging them to proactively consider all aspects of College life at HNC and what we mean when we promise to educate, enrich and enlighten our students.
One to one discussions
A smaller proportion of applicants may be asked to join a one to one discussion with a member of the Admissions team. This is usually when there is information that could indicate that HNC may not potentially be the right environment for an applicant. This might for example be because the applicant’s attendance, behaviour or commitment is significantly below our published entry criteria or because sensitive information has been shared during the application process and this needs to be discussed in a more private setting. It is important to understand that decisions following a one to one discussion are made using exactly the same criteria as for applicants in a group session and the same topics will be covered.
FAQs
You can change your application options at your Admissions Evening, subject to your predicted grades supporting entry to the courses you want to request to change to.
All applicants will be sent a short preparatory task designed to get them thinking about their finalised options before the Admissions Evening. It is a really good idea to look at what the entry criteria is for the courses you are going to ask for – we will only issue a conditional offer for a course where the predicted grades indicate an applicant is on track to secure the grades needed. We also recommend that applicants research the career paths their study programme can lead to, or what courses might need to be studied if they have a particular career path in mind.
All applicants will be automatically be allocated a group session, unless the information we hold indicates a one to one discussion would be more appropriate. A group session allows applicants to gain a real flavour of what life looks like in the classroom at HNC, therefore our expectation is that applicants fully participate in the Admissions Evening.
However, we recognise that there may be circumstances where reasonable adjustments need to be considered. In the invitation to the evening a form will be available where requests can be made. These will be reviewed and responded to. Please note that submissions of a request does not guarantee that it will be met, and the form is the only way that this request can be made. If an applicant has a request and does not complete the form by the deadline we cannot make adjustments at the evening.
We can provide general guidance regarding progression paths from courses and complementary course combinations. However, we cannot offer one to one careers advice at an Admissions Evening and applicants who require this will need to speak to their school or local careers advice service.
No, all admissions decisions are made on the basis of predicted grades, attendance, behaviour, commitment and punctuality as outlined in our Admissions Policy. However, we do recommend that applicants make the most of the Admissions Evening by participating fully as the activities are a genuine opportunity to really explore what life at HNC could look like.
Applicants must attend an Admissions Evening for the College to consider making a conditional offer. We therefore strongly recommend that applicants reserve the two dates of Tuesday 3 March and Thursday 12 March. However, if there are genuine evidenced circumstances such as a hospital stay, the College will consider alternative arrangements. Requests can be made via studentservices@huddnewcoll.ac.uk Please note that making a request is not a guarantee it can be met, therefore we strongly recommend that applicants attend their scheduled session. In all circumstances, any alternative will involve a face to face appointment at HNC.
The vast majority of applicants will receive an outcome at the Admissions Evening. In a small number of cases we may need further information before an outcome can be given – for example, if an applicant tells us that the information regarding predicted grades is inaccurate then we need to see updated information before a decision is given.
The Admissions Evening is an important part of supporting applicants to increased independence and parents/carers are not permitted to attend. Due to the number of applicants joining us on each evening we cannot accommodate parents/carers who wish to wait onsite.
