HNC’s Year 12 Applied Health and Social Care and A Level Physical Education (PE) students recently enjoyed a hands-on taster day at the University of Huddersfield, discovering more about what their next steps could look like if they choose to progress to higher education.
Students studying at HNC are encouraged to plan their progression and research the different routes available to them post-18. Taking part in taster days provides students with a genuine insight into university life and where are a degree could take them. HNC’s Sport and Health Faculty have recently spent time at the University of Huddersfield, discovering more about the wide range of courses available and exploring the university’s state of the art facilities.
A Level PE students took part in a number of degree level workshops to build on the knowledge developed at HNC, with sessions including Coaching, Psychology, Physiology, Nutrition and Biomechanics. The hands-on sessions were designed to showcase the different areas an A Level in PE could lead to, as well as providing an opportunity to learn some new skills and develop their wider knowledge of the topics currently being studied as part of their Level 3 qualifications. The taster day ended with a tour of the University’s extensive sports facilities, as well as hearing more from ActiveHud, the on campus gym and fitness team, about the facilities and classes available to those studying at the University.
Applied Health and Social Care students enjoyed spending their taster day in the brand-new Daphne Steele building, one of the University’s new centres that make up part of the wider National Health Innovation Campus – a development designed to improve the health outcomes for those living in the north of England. Sessions on the day included Nursing, Operational Therapy, Operating Department Therapy, Social Work, Podiatry and Health and Social Care workshops, all taking place in the University’s immersive simulation rooms, allowing students to experience a genuine insight into what life could look like working in a professional healthcare setting.
Tom Smith, Head of Faculty (Enrich) Health and Sport, comments “Students studying for a qualification in areas such as Health and Social Care and Physical Education have a wide variety of options open to them – whether they progress to university, an apprenticeship or the world of work. Once they have decided which route is right for them, they then need to consider which career is right for them, and taking part in taster days is a key way in which students can research and plan the best next steps for them. Our recent taster days at the University of Huddersfield have been impactful in a number of ways, from allowing our students to experience what life at a university could be like, to exploring the wide range of courses on offer. The topics explored at the University directly link with the learning undertaken at the College, and this will undoubtedly support our students as they head into their final year assessments. Thank you to the University for providing such an insightful experience!”
