CAREER READY: SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCE STUDENTS PLAN THEIR NEXT STEPS

HNC’s Applied Sport and Exercise Science students have been preparing for their next steps after College, from visiting the University of Huddersfield to hearing from Patrick Cassidy, Academy Physiotherapist for Huddersfield Town Football Club.

Students studying for a qualification in Applied Sport and Exercise Science can choose to study the subject full time, or as part of a wider study programme. However they choose to build their study programme, a qualification in Sport and Exercise Science can lead a number of different career paths, from coaching and teaching to physiotherapy and nutrition. Students studying Sport and Exercise Science at HNC are supported with their progression planning with a number of careers interactions taking place across the two years of study, ensuring that they are choosing the right next steps for their ambitions.

A recent visit to the University of Huddersfield showcased the broad range of sport-related degree programmes available to students post HNC. On the day, the group enjoyed taking part in degree-level workshops, exploring topics including isokinetics, BMI/BIA, jump tests and balance. The group also toured the university’s sports facilities and heard the AciveHud team, and current students, about the opportunities and experiences available to students.

The group have also recently welcomed Patrick Cassidy, Academy Physiotherapist for Huddersfield Town Football club for a career-focused guest lecture. Patrick, a former HNC student, shared more about his journey from HNC to his dream career, the route he took to qualify as a Physiotherapist, and what being a Physiotherapist for a professional football club looks like day to day.

Jo Lunn, Teacher of Applied Sport and Exercise Science comments “Ensuring that students are career ready is a key part of the HNC experience. Here in Sport and Exercise Science, students are exposed to a wide variety of options, and whether a student wishes to progress to a degree, an apprenticeship or the world of work after HNC, we support them on their journey. Our recent visit to the university has highlighted just how many different degree programmes are out there. Hearing from inspirational guest speakers – especially ones who have been sat in the very seats our current cohort are occupying – really does showcase where hard work can lead to. I look forward to hearing more about my students’ progression plans and where there Applied Sport and Exercise Science qualification will take them next!”
