CEO FOR THE DAY: APPLIED BUSINESS STUDENTS TAKE PART IN LEEDS BECKETT WORKSHOP

HNC has recently spent the day at Leeds Beckett University for an engaging and hands on workshop, where Applied Business students put the lessons learnt in the classroom to the test by acting as ‘CEO’ for the day to successfully launch a new product to market.

In Applied Business, students explore a variety of business disciplines to develop a strong foundation of business-related knowledge, from accounting and finance to marketing and logistics. During this hands on university level workshop, students from HNC joined the team at Leeds Becket University to develop this knowledge further during a specially designed challenge. On the day, the group were tasked with acting as a fictionalised American CEO bringing a new fruit-based drink to market, and using a state-of-the-art computer-generated programme, were split into categories and set a problem to solve in areas such as HR, finance, logistics, marketing, and communications. Students were challenged to work together to understand how each business discipline could effectively overcome any barriers, deciding on which method of problem solving would work best so that their decision-making processes would eventually lead to the successful launch of the product.

Once solved, the group were then asked to deliver a presentation to explain how they had successfully solved their ‘problem’. James Tindall, Faculty Lead Enlighten Business, comments “In Applied Business, students develop a wide range of skills and develop knowledge of a variety business-related disciplines. In this engaging session, our students were encouraged to “think like a CEO” by bringing the different areas of business together to ensure a successful product launch, putting the skills they have developed in the classroom to the test. Throughout the day our students worked hard to problem solve and think critically, and their final pitch at the end demonstrated a genuine understanding of how no one area of business can operate alone, and that businesses must work collaboratively to be successful. I am incredibly proud of our students who delivered a genuinely exceptional presentation at the end of the workshop”.
