CIAO! HNC TEXTILE DESIGN STUDENTS SAY HELLO TO A VENETIAN EXPERIENCE

HNC’s Year 13 A Level Textile Design students have recently returned from a life-changing trip to the famous Italian city of Venice, collecting images and inspiration for primary research purposes for their upcoming final assessments.

A Level Textile Design is a course that sees students put their creative and technical skills to the test, designing and creating garments using a range of specialist techniques. In Year 13, students are tasked with creating a final piece for assessment purposes, and the College’s annual trip to Venice provides an excellent opportunity for students to collect a wide range of high-quality primary research images, experiences, and souvenirs. Those taking part in the trip will complete a travel journal, documenting their time in the city to support their final assessment.

During the four-day trip, the group explored some of Venice’s most famous landmarks. Day one saw the group explore the city before heading to a traditional pizzeria. On day two, the group enjoyed a visit to the Peggy Guggenheim gallery, exploring a wide range of abstract art exhibitions, followed by a visit to the famous St Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace, the former Doge’s residence and seat of the Venetian government, both of which are famous for their ornate decoration and traditional Venetian architecture. On day three, the group caught a Vaporetto – the local water transport system – to two of Venice’s best-known islands, Murano, famed for its historic glass production, and Burano, known for its brightly coloured houses and artisanal lacemaking. Day four saw the group visit the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, famous for its beautiful 28m high external spiral staircase, which provides an unparalleled view of the Venetian skyline. The group also enjoyed touring the local markets, including the historic fish market, as well as visiting the Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art. A gallery of images from the week can be viewed below.

As well as enjoying all the sights and experiences that Venice has to offer, the group also ate at a range of local restaurants, enjoying classic Italian dishes such as lasagne, ragù alla bolognese and tiramisu. And of course, there were plenty of gelatos eaten along the way! Vicky Close, Faculty Lead Enrich (Digital and Creative Arts) shares more: “Our annual trip to Venice is a genuinely enlightening and inspirational experience for our Textile Design students. Venice is famous for being one of the world’s most beautiful cities, and is well known in the creative world for its beautiful lace and glass production, incredible architecture, and stand-out art galleries. Our Textile Design students, who were in awe of the sheer beauty of Venice, will use this experience to inform their final pieces, drawing on the knowledge gained and images taken during the trip. I am incredibly proud of how the group represented HNC and I know that the memories made on this trip will last them all a lifetime!”.
