Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Supplementary Level 3 Qualifications

The EPQ  is worth half an A-Level (up to 28 UCAS points) and allows students to explore a topic or issue that they are passionate about, beyond their studies. Sometimes students will also opt for topics that are linked to their current studies that they would like to conduct in-depth research on. During the EPQ journey students will develop and employ higher level study skills such as research, time management, project management, presentation skills, academic writing and referencing skills – making it a key way our students shine during competitive university application processes, while allowing them to hone their higher level academic skills.

Given the nature of the EPQ, it is usually suited to those on an A Level programme, and naturally students will need to commit to investing in their future selves, as undertaking an EPQ is an optional additional qualification that involves extended independent study, research and the production of a final project about their findings. However, HNC will discuss the appropriateness of an EPQ with all interested students and specialist staff are on hand to guide students through their EPQ journey.

Students who enrol on to an EPQ are guided to explore and discuss the appropriateness of their chosen topics, allowing our students to investigate areas they are passionate about, while opting for topics where they can achieve most highly.

The examining body for this qualification is AQA.

Specific requirements

Students on the XL programme will be invited to take part in the EPQ once they have enrolled at HNC. Students who express an interest in taking this additional qualification and who are not on the XL programme can speak to their Progress Tutor for further information.

Your learning experience

The EPQ allows you to research and lead on your own projects. During the EPQ you will plan and carry out research on a topic of your choosing- traditionally, this is something that isn’t covered by your other subject choices although some students do opt to undertake an in-depth investigation into something they have developed an interest in the classroom in. You can take inspiration for your project from your personal life, your studies, a hobby, or something completely urelated! The end product will be a written report based on your research. This is a qualification that will see you take charge of your own future under the expert guidance of our EPQ team. Taking an EPQ will help you to build key skills and will support your progression by:

  • Developing critical thinking skills
  • Developing independent learning skills
  • Developing problem-solving skills
  • Developing planning, research, analysis and presentation skills
  • Developing your creativity
